The two works by Kollwitz illustrated here were recently rediscovered in the collection of a Massachusetts family. They were originally thought to be lithographs from the “Gefallen” series. It was not until they were examined out of their frames by Nina Rayer of Nina Rayer Fine Art of Portland, a paper expert and the consultant to the Galleries for works on paper, that they were found to be original charcoal drawings. On fine and delicate paper with appropriate watermarks and deckled edges, they have since been reframed with museum rag mats for archival protection.
