From June to September, 1981, “Waiting” was on loan to the Chrysler Art
Museum by Walter F. Chrysler for a defintive retrospective of Hawthorne’s
work. While by most critical analyses the artist was firmly in the
mainstream of naturalism content and Impressionism in style, his interests
lay not so much in adapting the European art movements as taking a deeply
personal approach to his subjects. His penetrating portraits reveal at once
keen and mysterious psychological insights in which the very paint and its
application seem to play a role. The current image relates strongly to the
“The Wife.” offered by Barridoff Galleries at auction last year. Here the
mother and children are waiting, obviously for the father, a subject that
has particular relevance today.
