 This
excellent canvas, like the Italian School "St. Augustine",
illustrated
elsewhere, and the engraving by Teodoro Filippo di Liagno of the same
subject
as the Van Veen shown above, is consigned from an important Connecticut estate.
It
comes with a copy of a letter from Julius H. Weitzner, the highly respected London
dealer, dated April 3, 1963, to a previous owner which reads in part as follows: The
artist's
name is Otto van Veen, also called Octavius Venius...In his day he held many
important
positions and was closely connected with the highest Catholic personages of the
period.
The canvas originally came from an important English collection, I believe the
Duke of Norfolk.
The attribution was confirmed by several Italian experts, particularly Dr.
Federigo Zeri,
who is now writing the catalogue for the Metropolitan Museum.
