According to information garnered from the records of the National Academy and from a photo file at the Frick Library, New York, William Schuss, whose name is inscribed in paint verso, owned the current lot and The Young Husband: First Marketing when both works were exhibited together at the National Academy in 1854. The Young Husband was later purchased from Renaissance Galleries, Philadelphia by Victor Spark, New York and was acquired from him by Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Abrahams, New York. It was recently purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. According to the Frick file, “The pendant to this picture entitled The Young Wife: First Stew is presently unlocated.” The current auction lot, which is the same size and appears to be in the same frame as the Met oil, must be the missing painting.
