Edwin Lord Weeks
The Pink Parasol
Oil on Canvas
11 1/2" x 16"
Estimate: $12000/18000

Sold at Auction

A rare Impressionist oil by the esteemed Orientalist, The Pink Parasol is the second painting to arrive on the market from a distinguished collection of work by Weeks owned by the same Maine gentleman. It is also the second one that illustrates Weeks' command of the "new" artistic language of light in Europe, so much so that one wonders what led the artist down such a different path. (One could argue the connection academically; but on the surface, it is curious.) The earlier painting was sold at auction by Skinner in Bolton, Massachusetts during the early 80's and seems to have commanded extraordinary attention. In light of this smaller canvas, a study, it is not difficult to understand why.
