The late landscapes with sheep by Tait don't get more handsome than the
current, quite large example in which the artist's constant shepherd is
a proud and faithful presence. Tait's uncanny ability to capture
textures makes the observer want to reach out and pet the sheep as well
as the dog, who will be mindful of your presence, or so it would seem.
The scene is one that can still be seen today along rural roads, a
countryside with grazing sheep and a dog among rolling hills with stone
walls winding through the distance. Idyllic, but accurate; nostalgic,
but true; the composition is masterfully, but quietly, complex.
